Iain Chapple MBE

Iain is former Director of Research, Institute of Clinical Sciences and former Dean of the Dental School, Birmingham University UK. He authored 15 textbooks, 44 chapters and 330 papers and was recognised (2025) by Clarivate in their global highly cited researcher list (top 0.1%). Awards include the Royal College of Surgeons Tomes Medal-2011, IADR Distinguished Scientist in periodontal research-2018, EFP Eminence Award-2022, MBE-2022. His research focuses on periodontal–systemic disease mechanisms and immune–microbial interactions. He is an honorary consultant to the England’s Chief Dental Officer. Iain was: IADR Periodontal Research Group President (2006-7); European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) Treasurer (2007-2013), EFP Workshop co-chair (2008-current), EFP Scientific Advisory Committee Chair (2013-2016), EFP Secretary General (2016-2019); BSP President (2014-2015). He leads a national service for adults with Epidermolysis Bullosa. Iain lectures all over the world on his areas of interest an expertise.
