What has Aviation got to do with Dentistry?

Lessons from The Cockpit

Dental Showcase is challenging visitors to learn not only from their peers, but also that outside of the industry. In a captivating lecture, entitled ‘Lessons from the Cockpit’, Steve Hawkins, BA’s Chief Training Pilot, will compare aviation and dentistry.

Surprisingly there are a lot of similarities between the two. Risk is inherent in both - for the provider (pilot/dental professional) and the customer (passenger/patient). Similarly, dentistry and aviation are overseen by regulatory bodies, who set the standards, risk management, training and ongoing assessment of competence. Safety is key to both industries; however, Steve will explore how attitudes and cultures of the two industries may differ.

Steve will be just one of the captivating speakers assembled as part of the Dental Update Study day on Thursday 4 October, hosted by Professor Trevor Burke, who will be giving a lecture entitled ‘Minimising Failure with Direct Restorations and Crowns’. John Milne, Head of the CQC, will also present an engaging and potentially contentious session on regulatory matters whilst Tara Renton, will look at specific risks associated with oral surgery

Lessons from the Floor

Dental shows provide the ideal opportunity to learn what’s new from the dental trade and try first hand some of the latest technology. With over 350 exhibitors, you’ll be able to review all options before considering a purchase, many of whom will chose Dental Showcase as the platform to launch new products or offer special incentives to buy. Don’t forget to visit the stands of our two headline sponsors, Oral-B and Colgate, both have news for you.

Lessons from Tomorrow’s World

Those who’d rather attend shorter lectures, offering snapshots and practical advice, should visit the Innovation Theatre. The application of technology is core to these lectures and this year the event will utilise revolutionary new technology, introducing an interactive element to the live demonstrations taking place each morning. The afternoon sessions will allow you to peek into ‘tomorrow’s world’, with discussions and reviews of the latest technology accessible to dentistry. Pioneers and practitioners will talk you through its evolution and application.

….and Have Your Say with England’s CDO

The Office of the Chief Dental Officer (OCDO) will be at Dental Showcase for all three days and will have Sarah Hurley, CDO for England, talking each morning about the development and provision of NHS dental services. The Thursday morning session will be available to dental societies only, but Friday and Saturday are open to all on a first come, first served basis. It is anticipated that these briefings will engender much debate which can be continued at the CDO Zone, where panel discussions will run throughout the three days. The OCDO is keen for this to be a platform for two-way learning, so you can share your experiences, thoughts, frustrations and feedback, to those who directly influence policy change.
