The CDO Zone returns to the BDIA Dental Showcase
)
The UK dental profession is constantly developing in response to changes, challenges and new advancements. For dental teams on the ground, this necessitates the continuous evolution of clinical techniques, administrative protocols and patient management approaches. The goal remains the same – to deliver safe, effective and patient-centred care – regardless of whether dental professionals offer NHS or private dental services, from a single-surgery practice, multi-site business or hospital setting.
BDIA Dental Showcase 2025 will be the ideal hub from which all members of the dental team can access the latest industry information, guidelines and recommendations affecting the patient care they offer. Even more than this, it is the only dental event in the UK that partners with the Office of the Chief Dental Officer England (OCDO), bringing you an exclusive opportunity to engage with the CDO and his team.
They will be hosting a programme of presentations and discussions at the CDO Theatre on 14th and 15th March at ExCeL London. Attendees will hear from an array of highly esteemed speakers, each sharing up to date unique insights into the profession, with a wealth of advice for individuals to utilise in their own teams.
Commenting on his office’s involvement with BDIA Dental Showcase for another year, CDO Jason Wong said:
“I am delighted that the Office of the Chief Dental Officer England will once again have a theatre zone at BDIA Dental Showcase. In order to meet the challenges of modern-day healthcare our profession must be dynamic and this event is the ideal setting in which to engage with colleagues and discuss key oral health matters. The OCDO programme will feature a line-up of respected colleagues covering a diverse range of topics that are relevant to the entire profession. We look forward to providing essential insights applicable to all members of the dental team, students, and leaders of industry.”
The programme
So, what’s in store? Here’s a summary of the CDO Theatre programme and what you can expect to gain by attending in March:
Workforce and skill mix
It’s important for practice owners and all members of the team to understand how each individual’s skills contribute towards the patient experience and clinical efficiency. The session will cover HMR exemption myth-busting and how to put the GDC scope of practice into action amongst diverse practice landscapes.
Thriving beyond graduation – enabling career progression
High-quality education is essential to support clinicians. This session will highlight what training options are available to dentists who wish to expand their skills and explore existing postgraduate training routes.
Training the next generation – what do they want and need?
This interactive forum will seek attendees’ views and feedback during the session and discuss what oral health care professionals want from their future career, whilst meeting the oral health needs of the population.
Oral health societies and associations roundtable
This invitation-only session is for representatives of oral health societies and associations to discuss the issues and priorities facing their members right now.
Health and wellbeing support for the oral health team
The CDO will launch the Breathe Dental Wellness platform, which has been developed in conjunction with Dr Rana Al-Falaki of MedDent Leadership & Wellbeing Academy and Jackie Cooper of Cooper Transformations. Attendees will be guided through the platform, its content and how to use it in everyday life to increase staff wellbeing and performance.
Oral health policies – putting them into practice
The OCDO will discuss some of the recent standards introduced to guide the delivery of cancer care, manage frailty in the older population and support children in special education settings. Hear case studies from those who have implemented new pathways for their patients that reflect the new guidance.
Communication – the bridge between confusion and clarity
Communicating effectively with patients is key to building relationships of trust and respect. This session explores the impact social media can have on patients and their understanding of their own oral health needs. In addition, it will cover how to deliver information in the chair clearly and appropriately, and attendees will hear directly from a patient of their lived experience of oral cancer and the treatment they received.
Oral and general health – an essential partnership
‘Putting the mouth back in the body’ could be considered a slogan of dentistry as we evaluate the important bi-directional role between oral and general health. This demands closer relationships with colleagues across the healthcare spectrum as well as fresh ideas to drive the public health narrative. Novel dental health campaigns will be discussed during this session alongside research underpinning the mouth as an entry point to wider disease.
