As England’s professional lead for oral health and dental care Sara’s responsibilities include supporting NHS England, Health Education England and the Department of Health Ministerial team with professional and clinical advice.

Current priorities include the development and implementation of an Integrated Oral Health and Dental Care strategy for NHS England. The four key work strands are:

  • The re-design of the NHS England Commissioning infrastructure, weaving a clinical thread throughout the NHS England Dental Care commissioning chain.
  • A focus on integrated patient safety, event reporting and capturing learning to deliver on the NHS commitment to quality improvement within the dental care arena.
  • Setting the conditions for the success of the Department of Health Contract Reform programme; a critical activity if we are to make the transition from dental activity to oral health as the desired outcome of the NHS dental service.
  • And finally ensuring that oral health sits within every other health and social care pathway.

Whilst the CDO remit does not include NHS England commissioning of dental services she is focused on ensuring that regional and local area teams align their commissioning intent and healthcare initiatives with the strategic vision and evidence base in order to improve outcomes for patients across all five domains of the NHS Outcomes Framework.
