Matthew Hill, executive director of strategy, General Dental Council
The General Dental Council’s role is to protect patients and work to maintain confidence in dental services. We do this by regulating members of the dental team. The GDC recently published Shifting the balance: a better, fairer system of dental regulation, which sets out how the GDC plans to reform dental regulation. It sets out our aim to do more to reducing the risk of harm from occurring in the first place, not solely responding to harm once it occurs – we see this being an ‘upstream’ model of regulation. We want to build on existing best practice regarding complaints resolution so that we work with patients, dental professionals and our partners so we share an understanding of good complaints management and support professionals better to respond to feedback in the practise. While the model of regulation should not be solely about enforcement, it’s important to get this right, and we want to ensure our fitness to practise function is focused on the most serious issues, to make sure our powers are deployed where they can make a difference. Finally, the GDC cannot do this alone, and we want to work with all of our stakeholders to reform the model of dental regulation.
Matthew Hill will be talking to delegates about the GDC’s work in this area, and in particular the impending changes to requirement for the Enhanced Continuing Professional Development scheme.
